Let's Discuss "Shatter Me"

Woop woop! I have finally, lovelies, read Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. Almost everyone but me has read it and raved about it, and I finally get to add my voice to the total chaos. :D This isn't going to be a review. It's just going to be a list of things I like about Shatter Me and things I don't like about Shatter Me.

You can thank me later. Really. I don't mind.

Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1)

Things I Did Like:
1. The writing style was amazing for the most part. The way Mafi portrayed Juliette's partial insanity was amazing. I loved the crossed out sentences, the halting sentence fragments, and even the repetition most of the time.
2. HER POWERS ARE AMAZING. She can legit punch through a steel door, guys. Oh, and she kicked it a little.
3. I love the cover. Yes, that is a part of this list.
4. Juliette is a beautiful person. I mean, she is so kind which we see mostly through Adam's memories of her when she was younger. But also in the present time. She loves people just because they're people, even though almost everyone she knew before treated her like dirt. She rose above it.

Things I Didn't Like:
1. The writing style was weird in some parts. The metaphors were very...complicated. And slightly what-the-heck-are-you-trying-to-say.
2. I understand that Juliette is so hungry for love and touch and affection, but that shouldn't mean that she has to make out every little while. Especially in the same house as Adam's little brother.
3. The purple skin-tight suit at the end. Why? Everyone else gets silver or white or grey or something equally as nondescript. Why does Juliette get purple? It's almost like that scene is put there just so we can see the guys' reactions.
4. The ending. Was disappointing. It didn't make an impact, it wasn't abrupt. It ended on her stretching in her comfy clothes and thinking that they're going to make all the difference.

I gave this four stars on Goodreads because it was a good dystopian book. The action wasn't the best, but the characters were.

Comments

  1. Mm...I'm with you. I was actually really surprised because I didn't know it was a super-power book. I didn't know what I was thinking it'd be....but when they all ended up in just another version of Professor X's school for mutants? I was angry! The metaphors were way too random. But Juliette was beautiful! I REALLY like the last 2 (Ignite Me is the best, I reckon).

    1. Sorry for taking so long to answer! (or I think it has been...hm) Yeah, me neither, I was totally confused for ages about why Juliette refused to let anybody touch here etc. I didn't approve of the suit either (bad, Juliette). I really need/want to read the last two :D
