Figments Friday {2}

source: Briana  @Reader, Writer, Critic Figments Friday is a weekly feature hosted by Briana @Reader, Writer, Critic  where we share our writing and anything related--like snippets from our WIPs, character interviews, or even conversations between a character from one story and a character from another story.  Today I'm sharing another snippet from the story that I'm mainly working on now. Maybe sometime in the future I'll do an interview or something like that. :) My hand burns where it touches Keelin's. And I see flashes of images, fast as the speed of light, hurtling, zipping, careening through my mind. They are so intense--so strong--that the air itself seems to be resisting the attempts I make to breathe it in.  And worst of all. The very worst of all is the emotion that rolls so strongly through my body that I feel like vomiting up my breakfast.  I yank my hand back and give Keelin a forced small smile. "You'll be fine, sweets....

Filling the World with Beautiful Art + Figments Friday

Or something like that... I recently got a new laptop and one of the perks is that it's touchscreen. And when I've been coveting my sister's touchscreen solely because she got to use the paint tool which allows you to paint with your fingers on the screen , you can bet that's one of the first things I'm going to play around with. Since I haven't done any pencil drawings or acrylic paintings recently (but wanted to do a post on my art), I'm going to be showing you a few of my digital drawings. They aren't AMAZING but they're good enough that I feel okay about putting them out into the great big wide internet. ;) I did this one with watercolors for the rocks the waterfall is going down and the waterfall (and all other water) itself. I also used the watercolors on the person and boat because I wanted them to have a sort of dreamy feel. I used pastels for the vine that covers the whole left rock face, the water foaming up at the bottom, and th...

Ideas: A Journey of Thought and Change (Guest Post)

Image
    Hello, Life of a Random readers! If I don’t know you already, it’s a pleasure to meet your acquaintance :) When Skylar asked if I would write a guest post, she suggested I write about a specific part of writing, which was good because a) I love writing and b) I know a lot about writing. But then a little problem arose. You see, while I might know a lot about writing, I have yet to master the art of applying these "skills." I'm still floundering, knowing exactly what I need to be doing, but having trouble transferring my perfect, nebulous vision onto paper. Ideas are a different story (was that a pun?) I'm not usually the kind of person who struggles for ideas. I can hear almost anything and start constructing a premise around it. Call it a blessing. Call it a curse. All I know is that it makes math class somewhat bearable. But ideas are fragile. They might be powerful—like, the ideal challenging, oppression opposing, truth ...

Who Am I?

That got your attention didn't it. This is a post that I've been thinking about writing for a long time. It's kind of a introduction post and kind of a clarification post. I want to talk about my name. Around the time I started this blog, I decided to come up with a pen name in case I ever wanted to publish a book under one. Then, because I was paranoid over revealing any real-life information (courtesy of the mom), I decided to use that pen name as my name on Life of a Random too. In other words, Skylar Finn is my pen name and identity in the blogging community. I love it! I probably will write something under it, but...at the same time, I want people to become familiar with my real name too in case I ever publish anything under that or even meet some of you awesome people in real life. My real name is Selena Hughes. I go by Selena to almost everyone I know. No nicknames because...um just because. This brings me to a tricky situation when I do guest posts or ...

A Girl Betrayed (Or Something I've Written)

I have ten followers!! Woohoo! I am so excited because I never thought that I would be able to get any followers. You guys are the best. I was going to post about my experiences with make-up because I just started learning how to use it a little while ago (I'm eighteen...yeah, I know.), but I'm not really in the mood right now and it seems a little boring. Talk to me, girl readers. Would you like to read about my adventures in the make-up area? In celebration of the ten followers, I am going to post a short story that I wrote and that I talked about here . You can also read the summary of it on "My Works-in-Progress" page. It might be a little confusing as it sort of jumps into a scene without any background. So to get rid of confusion, the main character is late teens to early twenties and has a daughter. She had her daughter with a guy who betrayed her trust because of his loyalty to a certain liberal organization (that's as specific as I can get right no...
